Anzen and physics
My days are split between two things. At Anzen, I'm building features that use AI to make construction sites safer. Outside of work, I'm doing independent research in the foundations of quantum mechanics. One is very practical, the other very abstract, and I find each one clears my head for the other.
Rural Greece
Somewhere quiet in Greece, far from the noise. The kind of place where you can actually think. I find that the best ideas come when you remove the friction of city life and replace it with long walks and slow internet speeds.
Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics by John Bell
Bell's collected papers on the foundations of quantum mechanics, including the 1964 paper that gave us his inequality. What strikes me most is how carefully he states his assumptions, which is exactly why I keep poking at one of them. 'Bertlmann's Socks' alone is worth the price.
Determinism and entanglement
I keep returning to the question of whether quantum entanglement could emerge from a deeper deterministic substrate. Bell's theorem rules out local hidden variables, but only if we require statistical independence to be true. I am wondering what would happen if we removed it from the assumptions.
Edge AI for safer construction sites
At Anzen, I'm working on a system that puts AI directly on edge devices at construction sites. It spots safety violations in real time, and an operator cloud manages the whole fleet. It covers everything from provisioning devices to shipping models to the field.
Timos
I adopted an elderly English Setter named Timos who was abandoned by a hunter in the wilderness. He was only found because a fire broke out in that forest and firemen happened to go there. He doesn't see too well, he moves slowly, and he has clearly decided that sleeping on a bed is much better. He is right.
